Breast implantation can be an extremely rewarding procedure for women who have lost breast volume after having children, have significant breast asymmetry, or would simply like to have a larger or more proportionate look. Breast surgery is done under sedation, and allows patients to go home the same day. Breast reduction is a medical procedure, rather than a cosmetic surgery. Although the surgery does result in an aesthetically pleasing look, it is performed to reduce bothersome symptoms. Women with excessively large, heavy breasts often have pain in their shoulders, back and neck; rashes; and even tension headaches from the extra weight. Reduction surgery is designed to improve or eliminate these problems. Following the procedure, most women find that they have little or no back pain and can stand up straight. They can often engage in activities that were previously prohibitive because of the size and weight of their breasts. This surgery can be performed on an adult of virtually any age, and women who have had breast reductions have the highest patient satisfaction of any breast surgery. A common feeling expressed afterward is, "I wish I had done this years ago."
