Scars & Stretch Mark TreatmentScars

A scar forms when the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin receive a severe injury or are disrupted by illness. As the skin heals, it may form lumps (hypertrophic or keloid scars), abnormal pigmentation (hypo or hyper pigmented scars), red scars (vascular scars with too many blood vessels), or painful, growing scars (keloid). Some scarring is caused by abnormal healing unique to an individual patient (keloid scars are of this type). Pitted scars are often associated with acne. Indented or ice-pick scars are typical of chicken pox, and darkly pigmented scars and white scars are caused when the skin’s pigment cells are damaged.

Acne scars are created by severe acne that causes nodules - painful, pus-filled cysts or lumps under the skin. Most serious scarring is caused by more severe acne and/or "picking" at active acne. The best way to prevent acne scars is to get treatment soon after the acne appears, or better yet, get involved in an effective acne-prevention treatment regimen. If you have severe acne with nodules, see a skin care specialist right away. He or she will assess your acne and will probably prescribe some combination of topical gels or creams. The doctor may also prescribe antibiotic pills, oral contraceptives for some teen girls with acne (the hormones in birth control pills can help control acne in some cases), or other medication such as isotretinoin. Acne scars have traditionally been difficult to treat.

Recent breakthroughs in aesthetic medicine have led to increasing success in improving the appearance of various forms of scars, including acne scars. Potential scar treatments include microdermabrasion, skin rejuvenation, skin tightening, cosmetic fillers, and medical grade skin care products.

Stretchmarks

Pregnancy, weight gain/loss, and body building are the leading causes of stretch marks. Once the skin stretches to its limit, the deeper layers beneath the surface tear, causing a visible streak in the outer layer/epidermis. There are two basic varieties of stretch marks: white and red. Older, mature stretch marks are commonly white or silver-colored; newer stretch marks tend to be reddish or purple in color. Light-based technologies are now available to treat both types of stretch marks.

For extensive abdominal stretch marks and scars after pregnancy, c-sections and weight loss, Rejuvenate! Med Spa's trademarked tummy tuck, the Smart-Tuck™, may be the best solution.

We use laser light & heat to cause collagen beneath the skin to tighten, improving the appearance of stretch marks while promoting new collagen growth to fill in and lighten the color of stretch marks. The severity of stretch marks will determine which treatment option is best for you. Our experience is that newer, shallower stretch marks respond better than older and deeper stretch marks.
