Skin Cancer Surgery
Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. There are three different types: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Of the three, basal cell is by far the most common and fortunately the least dangerous. Melanoma is the least common and the most serious.
Treatment options depend on the type of cancer, location, size, and patient variables.
The best approach to skin cancer is, of course, prevention. Everyone should use sunscreen on all exposed skin. Any tan or burn, whether from the sun or a tanning bed, is damaging to the cell’s DNA and puts a person at risk for developing skin cancer later in life.
Professional screening methods often result in earlier diagnosis and often less invasive treatment of potentially serious conditions such as melanoma or basal cell carcinoma. Our team of cosmetic/plastic surgeons can remove both cosmetic and suspicious skin lesions and work with area labs to properly screen for skin cancer. If further treatment is required, our surgeons are qualified to treat the problem in as minimally invasive a manner as possible, although significant surgical intervention may be required in some cases.
Skin cancer lesions are extremely common on the face and other parts of the body and can be safely removed as an in-office, local anesthesia procedure that takes about 20-30 minutes. Scarring is minimal in most cases, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterward. When stitches are necessary, our experienced surgeons work carefully to give you the best possible cosmetic outcome.
