Surgical Skin Resurfacing
Skin resurfacing is a procedure performed to smooth surface irregularities, usually wrinkles and/or acne scars. It involves removal of the upper layers of skin with a surgical abrader. As the skin heals, the top layers grow back smoother than before.
Not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. People who have a history of bad scarring, keloid formation, pigment problems after skin injury, or some medical problems may not be able to have resurfacing.
Although resurfacing results are generally very good, the recovery time can be significant. Patients normally use ointments and dressings for the first week or so, and experience redness for some time thereafter. For people who can effectively manage this recovery process, resurfacing is an excellent procedure for smoothing deeper wrinkles or scars on the face.
