Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are very common—an estimated 25 million Americans are afflicted by varicose veins which can cause pain, swelling and disfigurement. Varicose veins are more common in women than men, and although we don’t know precisely why they occur, we know several factors play a role in their formation including heredity, obesity, pregnancy, aging, hormones and lifestyle.

Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic issue. They are considered a disease and corrective treatments such as the VNUS Closure® procedure are usually covered by medical insurance providers.

Varicose veins can cause a long list of symptoms including pain, throbbing, swelling, and more, or they may simply be a cosmetic concern.

Vein Disease comes in many shapes, sizes and varieties. The most common types we treat in the office are:

  • Varicose Veins are the large, bulgy veins that run up and down the thighs and lower legs. They occur because of disease of the valves in the large vein known as the greater saphenous vein or from smaller perforating veins.
  • Reticular veins are the dark, bluish veins that run just under the surface of the skin and which frequently form a network or criss-cross pattern. Reticular veins are fragile and bruise easily. Reticular veins are usually the “feeder veins” of the dreaded spider veins.
  • Spider veins or spider telangiectases are the nasty little vein networks very close to the surface of the skin that resemble lines on a roadmap or starbursts. They are typically less than 2mm in size and they are common around the ankles, thighs, and behind the knees. They are a major cosmetic problem and the reason many patients seek treatment.
